Rent-a-Chick from Legare Farms Education Foundation

This program is poplar with both teachers for their classrooms and with families with small children. You get two baby chicks for 2 weeks. They come with their own box, food, and instructions. All you have to do is love them, keep them warm, give them food a few times a day, make sure they have water, and change their paper. It’s a great learning experience for the children and the best part for Mom is that they come back to the farm after 2 weeks. It’s only $25 for the 2 weeks. You do need to reserve them in advance so call us at (843) 559-0763 if you are interested. We have 2 dates available for pickup April 8th and 9th and then Easter weekend April 22nd and 23rd.

Lenticels in the Lens Photography Contest

Submit your digital photos of lenticels, which are pore-like structures present on the surfaces of plants, notably on tree bark (see below for more information), to carolinachildrensgarden@gmail.com for a chance to win a field guide to trees and to have your work featured on our website and on the bulletin board in the Children's Garden. Awards will be given in three categories:
Youth (ages 12 and under)
Teens (ages 13-18)
Adults (ages 19 and up)

Photos must be received by March 20, 2010. Limit 3 submissions per photographer. Include the photographer's name, age (or age category), and the date and location of each photograph in the text of the e-mail. Other details, such as the tree type or camera specifications, are encouraged but not required.

National Environmental Education Week

This year National Environmental Education Week will be taking place April 10th-16th! Register now to become a part of a network of educators dedicated to increasing the environmental literacy of K-12 students.

The ocean covers nearly three quarters of our planet's surface, provides 70 percent of the oxygen in the atmosphere and houses about 20 percent of the known species on Earth. It regulates climate and weather and provides food and energy resources for humans worldwide. No matter how far from the coast, water in every stream or river on the planet eventually ends up in the ocean, and all life on Earth is dependent upon its health. Recognizing the importance of protecting the health of our ocean and understanding our dependence upon it regardless of its proximity, EE Week's 2011 theme is Ocean Connections.
